What Custom Printing Actually Costs
Let's start with the numbers, not the marketing pitch. Custom printing on pre-roll cone paper adds $0.005–$0.01 per unit over the cost of blank cones. The per-unit premium depends on the number of ink colors, print coverage area, and order volume.
At 250K cones:
- Blank cones: 250,000 × $0.046 = $11,500
- 1-color printed cones: 250,000 × $0.051 = $12,750
- Multi-color printed cones: 250,000 × $0.056 = $14,000
The print premium on a 250K order is $1,250–$2,500 total. That's your entire investment in putting your brand on every pre-roll that touches a consumer's hand.
When Custom Cones Pay for Themselves
Scenario 1: Brand Recognition in a Multi-Dispensary Market
Your pre-rolls sit next to 20+ other pre-roll brands in a dispensary case. The tube and label get the consumer's attention first — but the cone is what they hold, smoke, and remember. A blank white cone tells the consumer nothing about who made it. A branded cone with your logo and strain name reinforces your brand during the most intimate product interaction: consumption.
If that brand impression converts even 1% of consumers into repeat buyers at one dispensary, and those repeat purchases average $12/visit once per month, the annual revenue from that 1% lift is:
Assume 500 unique customers/month × 1% = 5 repeat customers × $12 × 12 months = $720/year per dispensary. If your pre-rolls are in 5 dispensaries, that's $3,600/year — more than the $2,500 custom printing cost. The ROI is positive in year one.
Scenario 2: Ohio Post-SB 56 (No Advertising Allowed)
Ohio's SB 56 advertising ban eliminated billboards, radio, TV, and internet advertising for cannabis operators. The remaining brand channels are in-store materials, packaging, and budtender recommendations. Custom cones become one of the few remaining ways to build brand awareness — and at $0.005–$0.01/unit, they're the cheapest brand channel left.
In a no-advertising market, the $1,250–$2,500 custom printing cost replaces what would have been a $10,000–$50,000 annual advertising budget. The ROI is obvious.
Scenario 3: White-Label Processor Differentiation
If you're a processor selling pre-rolls to multiple dispensaries, custom cones are the single most effective way to differentiate your product from other processors using the same dispensary shelves. The dispensary's budtender might not remember which processor's pre-roll is better — but they remember which one had a branded cone because it stood out in their hand during sampling.
When Custom Cones DON'T Make Sense
Custom printing isn't always the right call. Here's when blank cones are the better business decision:
Volume Under 250K
The minimum for custom printing is 250K cones. If you're a single dispensary doing 200 pre-rolls/week, 250K cones is a 24-month supply. That's too much capital tied up in inventory. Start with blank cones from a smaller order, validate your pre-roll line, and move to custom when your weekly production justifies the 250K commitment.
Extreme Price Competition
In markets like Flint where consumers buy strictly on price, the per-unit premium of custom cones may not translate to higher sell-through or repeat purchases. If your pre-roll retails at $5 and competes solely on price, the $0.005–$0.01/unit printing cost is better spent keeping the retail price low.
Rapid Strain Rotation
If you rotate strains weekly and print strain names on cones, you'll need separate print runs for each strain. At 250K minimum per print run, this only works if you're running high-volume strains consistently. For rotating strains, print your brand logo on the cone (constant) and put the strain name on the tube label (changeable).
What to Print on the Cone
The cone paper surface is limited — you're working with a narrow strip that's visible when the cone is packed. Maximize the branding impact:
Best practice: Logo + brand name. This is the universal choice that works for every strain and every dispensary. The cone becomes a branded object regardless of what's inside it.
Premium option: Logo + strain name. This works when you have 3–5 core strains with consistent production volume. Each strain gets its own cone design, creating a branded experience from tube to cone to smoke.
Avoid: Full-coverage printing that obscures the paper. Consumers want to see the cone paper — it signals quality. A clean logo on natural or white paper looks better than a fully wrapped design that hides the material.
