Cone Types: Custom, Glass Tip, and Ceramic Tip
Not all cones are the same product. The tip material and paper type change the retail price point, the consumer experience, and your brand positioning. Here's how they break down.
Custom Pre-Roll Cones
Your base production cone. Paper "W" or "4" fold filter tip, available in rice (refined white), natural brown, or organic hemp paper. These are what you run through a Knockbox, King Kone, or any standard filling machine at volume. No frills — just a consistent, dimensionally accurate cone ready for flower.
Custom cones are where branding starts. You can spec the paper type, cone size, filter length, and add a printed band or logo on the filter. At scale, these are your everyday SKU — the half-gram multi-packs and single-gram kings that make up the bulk of dispensary pre-roll shelves.
HIGHER pricing: $0.055–$0.046/unit depending on volume (250K–1M+ units). View Custom Pre-Roll Cones →
Glass Tip Cones
Glass filter tips immediately signal a premium product. The smooth mouthfeel is different from paper — consumers notice it the moment they pick one up. Glass tips cool the smoke, block particulates, and are reusable by the end consumer. For brands positioning at the mid-to-premium tier, glass tip cones justify a higher shelf price without changing your flower.
Glass tips are also practical at production scale. Modern filling machines accommodate glass-tipped cones without modification. The tip adds weight and a tactile quality that budtenders can sell — it's one of the easiest upsell conversations in a dispensary.
HIGHER pricing: $0.355–$0.297/unit (250K–1M+ units). View Glass Tip Cones →
Ceramic Tip Cones
The top of the line. Ceramic has a higher heat coefficient than glass, meaning it absorbs more heat from the smoke and delivers a noticeably cooler draw. The material splits the smoke stream as it passes through, increasing surface area and amplifying flavor. Ceramic tips carry weight — literally and in brand perception. This is your top-shelf product, the one that justifies $15+ pre-rolls at retail.
Ceramic-tipped cones are compatible with modern production lines and are reusable by the consumer. For brands building a premium identity, ceramic is the strongest material signal available in a pre-roll format.

Cone Sizing Guide
Cone size determines fill weight, smoke duration, retail format, and packaging requirements. These are the industry standard sizes with a 26mm filter tip.
| Size | Name | Fill Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70/26mm | Dogwalker | ~0.3g | Multi-packs, minis, budget SKUs |
| 84/26mm | Half-Gram | 0.7g | Standard singles, multi-packs |
| 98/26mm | 98 Special | 1–1.2g | Mid-size, session format |
| 109/26mm | King Size | 1.5g | Premium singles, shareable |
The 109mm King is the most common production format — it fits most standard filling machines without attachments. If you're launching a pre-roll line and want to start with one SKU, start here. For multi-packs, the 70mm and 84mm formats let you offer 5- or 10-packs at accessible price points without inflating your packaging cost.
Paper Types: What Actually Matters
There's a lot of marketing language around cone paper. "Rice paper" isn't made from rice. "Unbleached" doesn't mean the white version is bleached — modern refining doesn't use bleach. Here's what's actually different.
Refined White
Made from wood pulp, refined to remove all lignin (the compound that gives wood its color). The result is ultra-thin, transparent paper with virtually no flavor. GSM around 12.5. This is the most popular paper type in commercial pre-roll production because it lets the flower's flavor come through unaltered. Sometimes marketed as "rice paper" — it's not rice, it's just highly refined wood pulp.
Natural Brown
Same wood pulp as white, just less refined. Retains more lignin, which gives it the brown color and very slightly more body. Functionally almost identical to white in terms of burn and flavor — the difference is minimal in a blind test. The brown color reads as "natural" to consumers, which is a branding advantage for some brands.
Organic Hemp
Made from hemp fiber instead of wood. Slightly thicker (GSM around 13.5), less transparent, and has a mild earthy flavor that some consumers prefer. Burns slightly slower than white or brown. Strong sustainability positioning — appeals to eco-conscious brands and consumers. The least transparent option, which matters in states with opacity requirements.
The choice between these is a branding decision more than a functional one. White says "clean and premium." Brown says "natural." Hemp says "sustainable." All three work in standard production equipment.
Filter Tip Options
The filter tip is the part of the pre-roll the consumer physically touches. It has an outsized impact on perceived quality.
Paper "W" Tip
The industry standard. An internal W-fold provides basic filtration and structural support. Available in 26mm and 21mm lengths. Cheapest option, fully machine-compatible, gets the job done. This is what's on 90%+ of pre-rolls at dispensary.
Paper "4" Fold Tip
A specialized fold pattern that improves cone structure and airflow over the standard W. Better draw, slightly more rigid — a subtle upgrade that production-focused operators appreciate. No added material cost, just a better fold.
Glass Tip
Smooth borosilicate glass, typically 9mm or 10mm. Cools the smoke, blocks particulates, and is reusable. The weight and mouthfeel immediately communicate "premium" to the consumer. Budtenders can sell this — it's a visible, tangible upgrade over paper.
Ceramic Tip
The highest-end filter option available. Ceramic absorbs more heat than glass (higher heat coefficient), delivers the coolest draw, and splits the smoke stream for enhanced flavor. The weight and feel are unmistakable. This is your $15+ retail pre-roll positioning.
Wood Tip
Natural or flavored wood tips bridge the gap between a joint and a blunt. Available in natural, sweetened, or vanilla-flavored. Popular for brands that want a blunt-like experience without tobacco. Adds a distinctive look and mouthfeel.
What to Look For in a Cone Supplier
Not all wholesale cone suppliers are the same. Here's what separates a reliable supply partner from one that costs you production time and margin.
Factory-direct vs. distributor. Distributors mark up 20–40% on the same product you can get direct from the factory. A factory-direct supplier eliminates that margin layer. Ask your supplier: do you manufacture, or do you resell? The answer changes your cost per unit significantly.
Dimensional consistency. Cones are precision products. A 0.5mm variance in diameter causes jams on filling machines, increases scrap rate, and costs you labor. Machine-made cones from quality factories hold tighter tolerances than hand-rolled alternatives. Ask for sample runs before committing to volume.
Compliance documentation. Your cones should ship with CR certification and testing documentation. If you're in a market with child-resistant packaging requirements, that documentation isn't optional — it's what protects your license.
Lead time transparency. Sea freight from overseas factories takes 4–8 weeks. Air freight runs 7–12 days. A good supplier is upfront about timelines and doesn't promise what they can't deliver. Even better: a supplier with local stock that can ship in days when you need to cover a shortfall.
Pricing transparency. If you have to request a quote just to see a price range, that's a signal. Operators deserve to know the ballpark before they pick up the phone. We publish our pricing because we believe transparent pricing builds trust faster than hidden quotes.
