Why Premium Formats Need Premium Packaging
A standard pre-roll is a commodity. A hash hole is craftsmanship. The difference between a $6 infused joint and a $45 hash hole isn't just what's inside — it's how the entire product is presented, protected, and perceived. Packaging is the first physical interaction your customer has with a $45 product. If it arrives in a generic plastic tube, you've undermined the price point before they even light it.
Premium pre-roll formats are the fastest-growing segment in Michigan's $598 million pre-roll market. Wojo Co. won two categories at the 2025 Best in Grass Michigan competition — #1 Non-Infused and #1 Non-Solvent Infused with their Honey Hole. Pressure Pack built their brand around handcrafted hash holes with solventless rosin cores. Seed Junky's Tropical Burst Hash Hole placed in the same competition. These brands aren't competing on price. They're competing on experience — and packaging is a core part of that experience.
Specialty Pre-Roll Formats and What They Require
Hash Holes / Donuts
A column of solventless rosin or hash runs through the center of the pre-roll. The concentrate burns with the flower from start to finish, producing a slow, even burn with layered flavor. Typically 1.5–2g total with 0.5g of concentrate in the core. Retail: $25–$60+.
Packaging requirements: Glass tube is non-negotiable. The rosin core is temperature-sensitive — it can shift, melt, or degrade in plastic. The tube must be airtight (terpene preservation), crush-proof (the product is hand-rolled and fragile), and snug-fitting (no rattling around inside). Many hash hole brands include a reusable glass tip, which adds diameter — make sure your tube accommodates the wider profile.
Moonrocks / Tarantula Style
Pre-roll coated in heated distillate and rolled in kief, hash, or crystalline THCA. The exterior is visually striking — consumers can see the infusion. Cali-Blaze's tarantula-style format is the #2 pre-roll brand in Michigan at $72 million in sales.
Packaging requirements: Crush protection is critical — the kief coating is fragile and will smear against the inside of a loose container. Glass tubes with a tight internal diameter prevent movement. Clear glass lets customers see the coating, which is a selling point. Opaque-required states need colored glass tubes instead.
Glass Tip Pre-Rolls
A reusable glass filter tip integrated into the pre-roll. Delivers a cooler, smoother draw and signals premium quality. The glass tip adds value to the consumer experience and differentiates on the shelf.
Packaging requirements: Standard 116mm tubes often don't fit glass tip pre-rolls because the tip adds width. Our glass tip pre-roll cones ($0.297–$0.355/unit) are designed for this format. Pair with a glass tube or wide-mouth PET tube for packaging.
Ceramic Tip Pre-Rolls
The highest-end filter option. Ceramic tips deliver a cooled, smooth draw and feel premium in the hand. Brands like Jeeter use custom ceramic filters in their live resin infused pre-rolls.
Packaging requirements: Same as glass tip — check tube diameter compatibility. Our ceramic tip pre-roll cones ($0.395–$0.475/unit) are the premium tier for brands positioning at $20+ retail.
Premium Blunts
Tobacco-free leaf wraps or hemp wraps filled with premium flower, often infused. 2g+ format designed for sharing. Glacier Canna's Ice Pick lineup and Wojo Co.'s Stingerz represent this format in Michigan.
Packaging requirements: Wider diameter than standard pre-rolls — standard 16mm tubes won't fit. Wide-mouth glass tubes (25mm) or blunt cone-specific tubes are required. Airtight seal is essential because wraps dry out faster than paper.
Packaging Options by Price Point
The packaging cost should scale with the retail price. Here's how the math works for premium formats:
$15–$25 retail (infused singles): Glass tube ($0.095+/unit) or branded PET tube. Total packaging: $0.10–$0.30. Packaging is 0.5–2% of retail.
$25–$40 retail (hash holes, premium infused): Glass tube with CR cap. Consider cork-top glass tubes for a premium unboxing feel (check CR compliance in your state — cork alone is not CR-certified). Total packaging: $0.15–$0.50. Packaging is 0.5–1.5% of retail.
$40–$60+ retail (craft hash holes, limited drops): Glass tube inside a custom rigid box or branded secondary packaging. The box becomes the brand moment — embossed logo, soft-touch finish, internal tray. Total packaging: $0.50–$2.00. Packaging is 1–3% of retail — justified by the price point and the customer expectation.
Some premium brands package each hash hole in an individual doob tube, then seal the tube inside an airtight resealable Mylar pouch. The tube provides crush protection. The pouch provides branding surface area and an additional barrier layer. This dual-layer approach is popular with brands shipping through delivery services where package handling is unpredictable.
Michigan Brands Setting the Standard
Michigan's craft pre-roll scene is setting packaging standards that the rest of the country is following:
Wojo Co. — Their Honey Hole (2g joint, 1.5g flower + 0.5g live rosin, glass tip) won #1 Non-Solvent Infused at Best in Grass Michigan 2025. Packaging: glass tube with reusable glass tip. Known for selling out quickly — the premium packaging signals scarcity and quality.
Pressure Pack — Hand-rolled hash holes with solventless rosin cores. Small-batch cultivation with exotic genetics. Glass tube packaging matches the artisanal positioning.
Seed Junky — Elite genetics, Tropical Burst Hash Hole placed at Best in Grass MI 2025. Infused versions of their premium strains in glass packaging.
Glacier Canna — Ice Pick lineup with four new high-THC infused formats in early 2026. Statewide distribution from Metro Detroit to the Upper Peninsula. Packaging built for retail shelf presence across multiple dispensary formats.
Jeeter — The revenue leader ($105M+) uses glass tubes with custom ceramic filter tips across their live resin infused line. Their packaging is the benchmark for branded premium pre-rolls in Michigan.
The Cone Question: Standard vs. Specialty
Hash holes and specialty formats are almost always hand-rolled — the concentrate core requires manual placement that machines can't replicate at the same quality level. But the cone still matters. The paper, the tip, and the format affect burn quality, flavor, and the consumer's physical experience.
Our cone lineup maps directly to premium pre-roll formats:
Standard cones ($0.046+/unit): For internally infused pre-rolls where the cone is filled and packed by machine or by hand. White, brown, or hemp paper in 70mm through 109mm.
Glass tip cones ($0.297–$0.355/unit): Integrated glass filter tip. The premium consumer experience — cooler draw, reusable tip, premium shelf presence.
Ceramic tip cones ($0.395–$0.475/unit): The highest-end option. Ceramic delivers a cooled, smooth draw that glass tip can't match. For brands commanding $25+ retail.
Blunt cones (view pricing): Tobacco-free wraps for the 2g+ format. Available with glass tip, wood tip, or ceramic tip for further differentiation.
Glass and ceramic tip cones have a wider diameter at the mouth than standard paper-tipped cones. Before ordering tubes, verify that the internal diameter of your tube accommodates the tip width. Our wide-mouth glass tubes (25mm) are specifically designed for tip-equipped and blunt-format pre-rolls.
Compliance for Premium Formats
Premium doesn't exempt you from compliance. Hash holes and specialty pre-rolls face the same CR, labeling, and opacity requirements as any other cannabis product — plus additional considerations:
Potency labeling is critical. A 2g hash hole with 0.5g of rosin can test at 40–50%+ total THC. Accurate potency labeling protects your license and your customer.
Cork-top tubes are not CR-certified. Many operators use cork-top glass tubes for the premium aesthetic. Cork alone does not meet ASTM D3475 or 16 CFR 1700 standards. If your state requires CR packaging, you need a push-and-turn CR cap — or secondary CR packaging (a CR bag or box around the tube).
Glass tip disposal. Reusable glass tips are a consumer benefit, but some states require that all components of cannabis packaging be disposable or labeled for reuse. Check your state's specific rules.
For state-specific requirements, see our compliance guides: Michigan, California, Colorado, Ohio, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Arizona, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nevada.
